Welsh Danglers reports

8/9th May Porthcawl lighthouse

Barrelreef and Valleyboyo fished from around 11pm till 5.30am with high water around 4ish.
Baits taken were frozen peeler, mackerel, squid and sandeel.
Very quiet for the 1st 2 hours but then the dogfish started to feed a little. From around 3am they were biting every cast but sometimes annoyingly just holding on to the bait and leaving go at the base of the pier.
Sandeel and squid seemed to be the better baits, but the dogfish were taking everything.

Barrelreef ended with 6 dogfish some very big ones easily 2lb and Valleyboy had 2 dogfish but missed alot more.

Also someone fishing near to us on the top ledge lost a decent ray when he tried to lift it up the wall....his line snapped.

Packed up around 5.30am just as the sun came up. With plenty of tide still to fish and plenty of bites but we decided we'd had enough for one night.....still no rays though!

14th May Monknash

Barrelreef, Wilba, Valleyboyo and Herbie (a friend of the WelshDanglers) fished monknash 2 hours before low til 4 hours after.
Weather was bright sunshine with no wind making fishing very pleasant. Unfortunatly the fish werent that hungry!

We all fished very hard with sandeel, mackerel and squid baits but had a very quiet session.
Valleyboyo had what looked like small ray which came off in the surf. Doesn't count!!
Barrelreef also had a nice bite an hour after low which seemed like a decent fish but unfortunatly it came off half way in....gutted!!!
Wilba also blanked but not for want of trying.
Herbie managed to catch a codling on whole squid and that was the only fish of the session.

Besides the lack of fish (the bright sun probably didn't help) it was a good day and we all have burnt faces and necks!

Word of warning.....we thought all the talk of naturists/nudists down there were just a wind up.....it's not!! You have been warned!

Valleyboyo upset that the nudist women are too far away to have a good look!

16th May Cold Knap

This one was a very hastily arranged trip...with some left over squid from the freezer and a quick top up of sandeels and mackerel from the tackle shop. Somewhere easy and accessable...Cold Knap that will do we thought. We'd heard that a few ray had been caught there along with the doggies.

We started fishing 2 hours before high which was about 10pm.
Bites were slow at first but barrelreef on his 2nd cast had a cracking slackline bite which felt very heavy on retrieving.....Turned out to be a good sized dogfish which had wrapped it self in a ball in the trace.
Barrelreef thought it was something better!
This turned out to be the most exciting bit of the session...except the fox that came within 10 yards of us before realising we were there and legging it!
As darkness came we were having bites (from doggies) most casts.
Valleyboyo had 4 doggies and Barrelreef also had 4 doggies.
A short sharp session of 4 hours, 2 either side of high, with a nice break in the weather,  all in all not a bad night.

May 28th Llangennith

While on a weekend camping down the gower the 'Danglers' decided to have a session for flatties and bass down Hillend side of Llangennith.

Bait for the trip were maddies (mudrag), razorfish, mackerel, sandeel and lugworm.

We hit the beach 3 hours before high water which was at 8.30pm.....a little later than planned.
while walking over towards Burry holmes to try and avoid the surfer nobs we talked to a few of the anglers already fishing and things weren't looking good!
A few guys had been there 4 hours without a bite!
We decided to move another couple of hundred yards over and set up. More or less the 1st casts went in at once....2 hook flappers with size 2 hooks and various baits.
After a few quick moves up the beach Blackcat had  a knock and struck into the 1st fish a schoolie bass (his 1st) which had taken his lug bait.
Perhaps things would be better for us than the guys we spoke to we thought!

After some more frantic moving of gear Balckcat had another schoolie, and another after that. With no one else having a bite! Then on his next cast Blackcat had a better bite which put a nice little bend in his rod, on winding in he had managed a double shot...a schoolie bass and a nice flounder! 4 Casts, 5 fish, 1 Jammy bugger!
Barrelreef was next to have a bite which resulted in a schoolie taken on lug.
Around high water we started to have trouble with weed clogging the line so we moved over the beach 300 yards. Amazingly such a short move had taken us away from the weed.
We continued to have bites and probably missed more than we hooked.
Barrelreef caught another 2 schoolies and Valleyboyo managed 1 schoolie (also his 1st bass)
Wilba blanked but unluckily missed a few bites. Most of the bites came on lug and maddies but lug seemd to be the top bait.
We left around 9.30pm with Mission accomplished for the day by catching some bass.....all small though but cracking fun!
