Welsh Danglers reports

April

2006

2nd April West Bexington, Chesil beach

Barrelreef was invited to fish with the newly formed 'Ewenny angling club' (I think thats the name they've agreed on), on they're trip to Chesil beach.
Left very early and after a good drive got to West Bexi around 7.00am with high water at 9.30am.

Fished to the right of the carpark....conditions seemed good although there was a slight wind blowing straight onto the beach creating a bit of a surf...BASS...well thats what went through our minds.
2nd cast managed to see a knock in the wind and on winding in it was very heavy with the odd tug. ''Please be a good bass? Please be a good bass? or a late cod will do.'' Anyway turned out to be a double shot of dogfish that had snaffled the rag/mackerel cocktails.

The fishing got slower with Barrelreef landing another doggie and one of the other boys had a rockling and doggie. That's all the fish that we had on the day with the wind picking up very strongly and making fishing very uncomfirtale to say the least.

Anyway despite the lack of fish a good day was had with Barrelreef winning the pool for most/heaviest fish, and a good craic had by all.
Thanks to 'Ewenny angling club' for inviting me.

April 9th Toms point, Barry

Fished the point today for the 1st time after having difficulty finding parking to fish Friars point which would have been our 1st choice.
Fished from around 2pm until 7pm with high water at 5.30ish. Teggy and Valleyboyo fished one rod each with Barrelreef fishing 2 rods one with size 1 flappers and the other with pulley pennels and large baits.

Had small bites from our 1st casts which on winding in turned out to be crabs stripping the bait.
1st fish of the day fell to Teggy, a small pouting which had taken a ragworm tipped with mackerel.
Teggy also landed the 2nd fish of the day......after having a ripper of a bite, picked up the rod and wound in, after a decent scrap to the surprise of us all a nice 2lb pollack.

Bites seemed to slow after that with Barrelreef catching a small whiting and Teggy manging another fish a codling of around 1lb.
Valleyboyo blanked and no bites on the bigger baits for  Barrelreef.
A good welcome back to fishing for Teggy after a year off!

No wonder he blanked....wake up lazy bones!!!

April 14th Ogmore - rocks to the left of the beach

Fished on the rocks known as 'the gate' on the left of the beach , from 5pm til 9.30pm. High water was at 8pm.

We all had knocks from our 1st casts....Valleyboyo landed an undersized whiting followed by a dogfish.
Barrelreef then landed a small whiting and also a dogfish later.
A friend of Barrelreef's was also fishing this area and called us over to have a look at a nice small eyed ray of around 8lb he'd caught....lovely fish!

With new enthusiasm after seeing that ray we all rushed to get fresh bait in the water.
The evening continued with bites and some fish with Barrelreef landing 4 doggies, 2 whiting and a pouting,
Valleyboyo 3 doggies  and 2 whiting and a fish dropped in the surf.
Wilba unfortunatly blanked but missed a few good bites and got snagged winding in a decent fish!

A good session on a new mark for us...no rays yet though!

April 15th Ogmore shingle beach World Sea Fishing.com meet up

Fished ogmore again for the WSF South Wales meet up. This time because there were more of us..we decided to fish the beach backing up onto the shingle towards high water.

We got to the beach around 3ish with high at 9pm and fished till 10pm.

Things started off ok with Barrelreef landing a small whiting and small pouting on the 1st 2 casts. Valleyboyo also landed a small whiting soon after. With the tide racing in we were soon on the shingle with small fish still coming in...Barrelreef with another small pouting and whiting.
Teggy also managed to find a few fish.

We carried on fishing til about 10ish with bites thin on the ground.
Barrelreef finished with 3 whiting, 2 pouting and a dogfish.
Valleyboyo finished with 3 whiting, a pouting and a dogfish.
Teggy manged 2 whiting and 2 dogfish.
Blackcat and wilba both blanked.
Best baits seemed to be sandeel or ragworm/mackerel cocktails.

An enjoyable day for us all, a few beers and plenty of laughs also met up with a few WSF boys we haven't seen for a while.

Almost forgot..here's one of a fish!

April 17th Ogmore Deeps

Valleyboyo and Barrelreef fished the deeps from around 6ish til 10.30pm

Main baits were sandeel, squid and mackerel or cocktails of them.

Barrelreef had a long but very skinny whiting 2nd cast.
Had bites on most baits and barrel added 3 doggies as well.
Valleyboyo had a dogfish drop off as he lifted it from the water, but didn't mange to land any fish.
Although Barrelreef hooked into a decent fish last cast but the trace got snagged on the way in and trace and fish were lost.
A short sharp session trying for some rays but still not had any so far this year....we'll keep trying!

Sorry no pictures for this one.....forgot camera and battery died in camera phone.
Would have been gutted if one fo us did catch a nice fish with no cameras!

April 26th Ogmore bit further on than cod's gulley

Barrelreef and Valleyboyo fished from around 3pm til 8pm with high around 6.30ish.
Baits taken were sandeels, mackerel, squid and peeler crab.

There were already loads of anglers fishing so we had to settle on a mark we knew further on from our preferred mark.

Conditions were a little more difficult than we thought they would be....a slight misjudgement on tide height by Barrelreef and the wind picking up more than the forecast!
Still not that bad though.

The 1st few casts resulted in nothing but then Barrelreef managed to land a whiting and dogfish to sandeel and crab baits.
After another quiet period of around an hour and a half, Barrelreef managed to land two dogfish on sandeel one after the other along with another small whiting.
Valleyboyo landed a dogfish around high water to save him from blanking!

A nice night....shame the rays didn't bite AGAIN!
Had a bit of a warning when 2 bigger waves came one after each other very quickly and nearly took Barrelreef's tripod....lucky we were further back baiting up or we'd have been soaked or worse swept off the rocks!! Just a warning for everyody keep alert and give the sea the respect it deserves!

April 29th Porthcawl pier - Lower section

After some deliberation on where we should fish it was decided we all wanted a nice easy location just to drown a few worms and relax....So the pier it was!

With high water at 9pmish we got to the pier around 5.30 to find the end and top were already full, so we had to make do with fishing the lower section.

The 1st hour was a little slow with some small rattles but no fish......then Blackcat had a nice little bite and wound in to find a nice little plate sized turbot, which had taken a ragworm/mackerel bait. It also swam away nicely when released.
Next to catch was Barrelreef with a small whiting.

A spare rod had been set up by Barrelreef with a small weight and hook just to drop down the side for anything lurking there.
While Barrelreef visited the toilet Valleyboyo had baited this up with ragworm and sneakily hooked a small pollack which was the only one of the night on the 'down the side' setup.

As darkness approached the dogfish decided to feed with Blackcat catching 5 on various fishbaits.
Valleyboyo was also catching dogfish with the odd whiting.

Wilba and Teggy were having bites but not catching.....although wilba did manage to catch his 1st dogfish later along with another straight after.

With the tide going out fast the dogfish were still biting in only a few feet of water.
We fished until the tide receded leaving no water left to fish in and then headed home around 1am.

A quietish but nice easy enjoyable session.
