5th January Cardiff foreshore

1st session of the year Valleyboyo and Barrelreef headed down the foreshore and fished near to cods corner.
With a little break in the heavy rain and winds it was a nice calm night with high water at around 930pm.
Baits for the evening were fresh black lug, blow lug, ragworm, squid and mackerel.

We both had few small knocks before high water but no fish. as the tide turned the people fishing to our right started to have a few knocks and 1 or 2 codling.
Valleyboyo had a slackline bite but missed it though.
The guys on our right continued to have bites and a few codling to around 3lb and it seemed that the only bait being taken was crab, (we didin't take any).

We both blanked but it was nice to get out and have a go.
Before they left the guys using the crab gave us a load of lug which they hadn't used... Cheers

6th January Ranny pool Penarth

With loads of worm given to us the previous day we decided to fish the ranny over low and meet Wilba who was fishing there with MPH (WSF member and wilba's regular fishing partner).

It was our 1st time fishing the Ranny so we weren't sure how it would go but  reports had been good with some decent cod showing.

Our baits were black lug, blow lug, squid, mackerel and crab (just in case didn't want to get caught short again).

When we arrived the tide was still ebbing so we set up and fished right into the pool while Wilba was out on the spit.
1st bite was to Blackcat who unluckily missed it then barrelreef had a bite and got snagged with a fish on and the line snapped.
Bites were very slow from then on as the tide started to flow in.
Barrelreef meanwhile had lost a few sets of end tackel so switched to a rotten bottom which the boys thought was great so they could take the mick.

As the tide flooded in more we moved back over to fish in front of the mud steps, on the pebbles.
We fished right up until high water with no fish to show although onour last casts Valleyboyo reeled in a small whiting to dave his blank

Also met 'Goldby' a WSF member and regular reader of our website who had recognised us by our smocks. Nice to meet you fella

A very quiet day with only the one whiting to show for nearly 9 hours fishing

20th January Penarth beach

With Wilba already fishing the beach we decided to meet him and fish there to get some cover from the strong westerlies.

We got there around around 5pm with high water at 8pm. Wilba had already managed to land a codling around the 1lb mark.

1st casts went out with mostly worm baits and barrelreef had a small knock as soon as the rod was put in the rest but it was left to develop. Then Barrelreef's rod went mad and pulled round so Barrel struck and could feel a good weight, maybe a decent codling we all thought. On landing though it was clear that 2 smaller fish had taken the baits and some weed had wrapped around the trace.
Still 2 fish (whiting about 6oz and codling about 4oz) to start the day isn't bad

No more bites came though and Wilba and MPH left for home just before high water. It was clear we had misjudged the tide height though as it came right up to the wall/cliff at high and we had to get off the beach. Instead of waiting for it to start ebbing we called it a night and went home

23rd January Cold Knap

With some bait keft from the weekend Barrelreef and Valleyboyo fished Cold Knap from 7pm til 11pm with high around 10ish

A clear but very cold night with a light north easterly wind and time to wrap up warm.
The plan was to fish 2 rods each one set up with pulleys and big baits and the other with smaller hooks rigs.
1st casts were put out and Barrelreef and Valleyboyo both had small knocks on the smaller set ups and Barrelreef landed a small pouting to start things off.

We had a few more bites on the scratching set ups with Barrelreef also landing a small whiting. No bites on the bigger baits though.

As the bites slowed after high and our fingers getting colder we packed up and headed home.

28th January Cold Knap

The plan for the day was to fish ogmore deeps while the weather and tides were ok to do so.
With high water at 2pm we got to the deeps about 11ish to find it packed out. So we headed off to fish either the shingle beach or cod gulley instead, only to find these packed out as well. With no room to fish anywhere  we decided to cut our losses and fish the knap where reports that some tidy whiting were showing.

The knap was also full of anglers but we managed to find spaces and set up.
We got talikng to another angler who said he had been fishing since 10am and so far blanked and he hadn't seen any fish landed!

No bites for any of the Danglers up until just after high when Barrelreef hooked a whiting.
We started to have a few bites but struggling to hook any so we packed up about 5pm with only the 1 fish to show.
