Welsh Danglers reports

September 3rd - Magor

Valleyboyo and Barrelreef travelled East toward the mud of Magor to fish for soles and early codling with friend of the Danglers Herbie.
Conditions were not the best for the day with a strong southerly wind being a bit more than the light south westerly forecast. It was decided to carry on as planned as all the bait (lug/rag, mackerel and peelers) was ready, and hope that the wind would ease.

We set our gear up after a little slip sliding through the mud and banged out our 1st casts.
It was clear that bites were going to be hard to detect in the wind unless it was a real good 'un.
On Barrelreef's 1st cast a little slip caused a badly mistimed cast with the lead and baited trace landing 20 yards out and 40 yards to the left. It was left there while the overun was untangled.
After sorting it out Barrel reeled it in to recast only to find a lovely little sole chomping on the lugworm, a 1st for Barrel. After a quick photo it was returned unharmed.

That sole turned out to be the only fish of the day for us although Valleyboyo had a codling come off as it broke surface. we did see one guy to our right catch 5 good sole and a codling.

A quiet day with very few bites but a new species for Barrelreef.

September 10th Chesil beach (portland end)

Valleyboyo and Barrelreef tagged along on a trip to chesil with Penygraig sac.

To be honest hopes were high when we got there, but after talking to a few other anglers it was clear the fishing had been poor over the last couple of days with mainly mackerel and garfish and they were thin on the ground.

We set up and cast out our baited traces and then put some feathers on the spare rods to try for some mackerel,
Herbie managed 2 mackerel 1st cast but nothing after.

We didn't have any bites on our ledgered baits until Valleyboyo caught a mackerel of 11oz on a mackerel strip bait!!

That was all for the day  for us we had tried floatfishing and spinning as well but no more fish showed although Valleyboyo's mackerel helped him win a share of the pool for the day. Despite a very quiet day it was a good laugh....a few cans, a lovely day and a quick refreshing dip in the sea before we came home.

September 30th - Porthcawl pier

The Danglers decided on a trip to the pier to try for some rays and whatever else was hungry.

We fished an evening spring tide which was the highest we had seen in Porthcawl with water coming within a foot of the lower wall, we were fishing on due to the lighthouse being packed out.

A very quiet night with only a dogfish for Barrelreef.
Blackcat had a stonker of a bite on high water with whatever he had hooked taking line off his reel steadily. After a 15 minute fight Blackcat seemed to be getting the upper hand with the fish coming in slowly, then.... ping he fell back swearing!
Whatever it was had enough and went for it snapping his line. Our guess was maybe that it could have been a decent conger, we'll never know for sure!!
